Justin B. Starren, MD, PhD Justin B. Starren, MD, PhD is a Supervisor for UW-ICTR and also the Director of the Marshfield Biomedical Informatics Research Center.

The Biomedical Informatics Research Center (BIRC) is Marshfield Clinic Research Foundation's newest research center. Resources from several Clinic and Research Foundation areas were joined to create BIRC and provides research support in programming, information systems support, biostatistics and data management. As Director of this program, Dr. Starren leads the BIRC team to accelerate improvements in human health and well being through informatics research. Bioinformatics researchers study how to better apply information technology to health care. BIRC assets include a sophisticated electronic medical record, the Personalized Medicine Research Database, and the Marshfield Epidemiologic Study Area. BIRC is developing new algorithms and tools to help researchers determine the genetic basis of disease, improve efficacy of medications, and reduce adverse drug reactions.

Dr. Starren received his PhD in Medical Informatics from Columbia University, New York, NY and his MD-MA combined program degree in Immunogenetics, from Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO.

After completion of his degrees he served as an Associate Professor of Clinical Biomedical Informatics and Radiology, and as an Assistant Professor of Medical Informatics and Radiology at Columbia University, NY. He joined MCRF in 2006. Dr. Starren serves on the National CTSA Informatics Key Function Committee.
