The Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene (WSLH) provides clinical, environmental and occupational laboratory expertise to a wide variety of academic, health-care, governmental and private-sector organizations at the national, state and local levels. Founded in 1903, the WSLH is administratively attached to the University of Wisconsin. Many staff hold faculty appointments in the School of Medicine and Public Health, the College of Engineering and the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. WSLH staff frequently interact with state agencies, local units of government, a statewide network of clinical laboratories, and numerous researchers at the University, where they serve as both a partner and leader in implementation of the “Wisconsin Idea.”

The WSLH clinical laboratories (located on campus at 465 Henry Mall) offer an array of diagnostic testing options with a wide range of technologies, including BSL-3 laboratories, molecular real-time PCR, pyrosequencing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, serologic testing, drug susceptibility testing, tandem mass spectrometers for newborn screening of multiple metabolic disorders, cytogenetic analysis of clinical specimens, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis, array-based comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) , and molecular testing for Fragile X syndrome, Prader-Willi/Angelman Syndromes and common chromosomal rearrangements in hematologic malignancies.

Research projects at Henry Mall include investigating genetic causes of stillbirth and non-syndromic mental retardation, developing new platforms and applications for aCGH testing, diagnostic test evaluation and validation, and viral and bacterial pathogen surveillance. Additional research studies are performed in collaboration with UW-Madison faculty from the Departments of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Pediatrics, Medical Genetics, Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Family Medicine, Population Health Science and several others.

The WSLH environmental and occupational health laboratories, located at 2601 Agriculture Drive, include organic and inorganic chemistry, environmental toxicology, forensic toxicology, clinical metals toxicology, radiochemistry, bio-aerosols and water microbiology. This laboratory serves as the main laboratory for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and one of only two national OSHA contract laboratories.

Research at the Agriculture Drive laboratory includes support for clinical cancer studies, evaluation of fine air particulates and diesel emissions, biomonitoring, and environmental toxicology studies. Specialized equipment includes an ultra-low level trace metals clean laboratory, scanning transmission electron microscopy, inductively coupled plasma emission/mass spectrometry (ICP/MS), high performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS/MS), high resolution mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with air canister auto-samplers

As Wisconsin’s public health testing laboratory, the WSLH collects and stores vast amounts of clinical specimens and environmental samples with potential for numerous prospective and retrospective research studies. As an ICTR Core Laboratory, the WSLH will give special consideration to ICTR members.
