Research Education and Career Development (REC)

About REC

The overall aim of the Research Education and Career Development (REC) Core is to develop a diverse, multidisciplinary, clinical and translational research workforce to accelerate the translation of research findings into evidence-based policies and practices that improve the health of all populations in the United States. REC offers a wide array of educational, training and career development opportunities to meet the needs of ICTR trainees and scholars. Opportunities also exist for post-doctoral fellows, junior faculty and graduate students in the Schools of Medicine and Public Health, Nursing, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine and the College of Engineering and for Health Science professionals who are interested in learning more about clinical and translational research. To achieve these goals, the REC Core will work closely with the other Cores of ICTR to implement, evaluate, and continuously improve the curriculum and career development support services available.

Clinical Research Workshops and Training Resources

This collection of information is designed to centralize clinical research training resources that are available at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and from other select institutions. Training opportunities provided by the School of Medicine and Public Health and the Institute of Clinical and Translational Research are specifically featured. The collection has been developed in collaboration with faculty who direct research training programs for postdoctoral medical fellows.

These resources, while developed with the postdoctoral trainee in mind, are useful to a broader group of individuals, including medical residents, study coordinators, and nursing or allied health students. The site is organized around eight general areas identified to meet the learning needs of novice investigators. Content will be updated on a regular basis as more resources become available or training resource suggestions are received by users.

Graduate Program in Clinical Investigation

The fall of 2009 will mark the official start of the new Graduate Program in Clinical Investigation (GPCI), housed in the Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. The GPCI, which includes a MS, a PhD, and a PhD Minor, has been in development for several years and is a direct response to the broadly-recognized need, most notably by the National Institutes of Health in 1998, to stimulate more clinical research and develop and promote clinical research training programs.

Currently, a Capstone Certificate in the Fundamentals of Clinical Research and a Certificate in Type 2 Translational Research are available through ICTR. Details for each certificate are below.

Capstone Certificate in the Fundamentals of Clinical Research

To conduct clinical studies adequately, it is necessary to understand the principles of research design and statistical analysis. With the increasing complexities in clinical research, it is imperative that clinical researchers receive a minimum training in clinical research methods. The objective of this capstone certificate program in clinical research methodology is to provide formalized training and a practicum in research design and statistical analysis for clinical research to professionals in health care and biotechnology and in the pharmaceutical industry.

Certificate in Type 2 Translational Research

The Certificate in Type 2 Translational Research addresses a well documented gap in what should be a continuum between basic health and medical research discoveries and the application of those discoveries in clinical and public health practice. To bridge this gap new discoveries must move beyond efficacy studies (type I translational research) to research that tests effectiveness in real world settings.

What is Type 2 Translational Research (T2TR)?
Type 2 translational research builds on type 1 by focusing on the application of efficacious practices in typical community settings, exploring factors that facilitate or impede implementation of efficacious practices. Type 2 translational research requires engagement among community members, organizations, clinicians and researchers as partners in the research process and draws on a distinct set of skills. This certificate focuses on the development of skills to engage successfully in T2TR.
