The Assay Services Laboratories at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center (WNPRC) offers an array of assays at special research rates to ICTR members. Joseph Kemnitz, PhD, director of the NIH-funded Primate Center, is also head of the ICTR Translational Technologies and Research Core, and supervises the ICTR Core Laboratory program.
The Assay Service offers up-to-date analysis of hormones and biomarkers. Measurements are performed on samples of blood, urine, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva and feces. Methods include Radioimmunoassays (RIA), Immunoradiometric (IRMA) assays; EnzymeimmunoAssay (EIA), High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), LC/MS and Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) assay techniques.
At present, approximately 60 separate hormones and biomarkers are routinely measured and a substantial number have already been validated for use in humans. Adapting many of the remaining assays for use in humans requires only a simple process for validation, generally requiring purchase of appropriate kits or obtaining specific antibodies.
The Hormone Assay Service performs more than 40,000 determinations annually. For ICTR members, hormone assays generally range from $6–$45 per sample, an economical option for investigators who previously had to use outside laboratories offering services at higher costs.
More information, including lists of assays performed, is available to ICTR members by accessing the members-only ICTR web with their username and password. This internal Core Laboratories web section also provides contact information for ICTR/Assay laboratory staff who will work with the investigator or staff to determine costs, processes, and validate tests for humans if necessary.
